How to Build Online Reputation as a Contractor

Start with Google, because it feeds every downstream channel. 40+ Google reviews above 4.3 stars is the foundation that makes everything else — paid ads, AEO, referrals — more effective. From there, add reviews on the industry-specific platforms your customers check: Houzz for renovation work, HomeStars for Canadian residential services, Angi for US home services.

The contractor reputation problem is specific: you do good work but you don't ask for reviews, so your competitors who do slightly worse work but ask consistently outrank you. The business with 8 reviews and a 4.9 is invisible next to the business with 85 reviews and a 4.5. This is fixable but requires a system, not a one-time push.

The system: at job completion, the technician or project manager does a verbal close ('Are you happy with everything?') and if the customer says yes, hands over a printed card with your Google review link as a QR code. The QR code eliminates the step of finding your business on Google and sends them directly to the review form. The card can also include a text number they can text for after-hours issues — which handles two reputation problems at once by giving unhappy customers a private resolution path. Run this system for six months and the review count difference between you and your competitors closes. We've seen contractors go from 12 to 94 reviews in eight months using this approach.
