How Reviews Affect AI Search Recommendations
Reviews are the highest-weight signal for local business placement in AI search. More than website quality, structured data, or content quantity — for local service businesses, review volume and recency is the primary factor that determines whether AI platforms recommend you.
This surprises many businesses that have invested heavily in SEO or content. In traditional Google search, reviews are one of many ranking factors and their direct impact on position is debated. In AI search, reviews function as the credibility proxy — they are the primary way AI systems validate that a local business is active, trusted, and worth recommending to a user.
The threshold we observe consistently in Edmonton and Calgary local service categories: businesses below 20 reviews rarely appear in AI recommendations for competitive queries, regardless of other signals. Businesses with 40+ recent reviews appear significantly more often than those with fewer. This is not a small effect — it is often the decisive factor between a business that appears in AI answers and a competitor that does not.
Review volume
HighestTotal number of Google reviews. In competitive local markets, 40+ is a meaningful threshold. More is consistently better — there is no ceiling where additional reviews stop mattering.
Review recency
HighReviews received in the last 90 days. A business with 60 reviews all received 3 years ago performs worse than a business with 35 reviews received steadily over the last 12 months. Recency signals that the business is currently active.
Star rating
HighBelow 4.0 is a visible negative signal. Above 4.2, the marginal value of rating improvement is lower than the value of volume improvement. A 4.4 rating with 20 reviews performs worse than a 4.2 rating with 50 reviews.
Review response rate
MediumResponding to reviews — including negative ones — signals an active, engaged business. AI systems can parse review response patterns as an activity indicator.
Third-party reviews
MediumYelp, HomeStars, BBB, Houzz, and industry-specific review platforms. Google reviews carry the most weight, but third-party reviews contribute to cross-source validation.
