How Contractors Get Found in AI Search
When a property owner asks ChatGPT for a contractor recommendation, the businesses that appear are not there by accident. They have review profiles, structured websites, and consistent directory presence that gave AI systems enough confidence to name them specifically. Contractors who don't appear are not being penalized — they simply haven't built the signals that AI platforms look for.
The contractor queries that AI search handles most often: 'best general contractor in [city]', 'who should I call for a kitchen renovation', 'roofing company near me with good reviews', 'reliable HVAC contractor [city]'. These are all recommendation queries — the user wants a specific name and a reason, not a list of links to click through.
For a contractor to appear in these answers, three signals are typically needed in combination: a review count above the local competitive threshold (usually 30–50+ in Edmonton and Calgary for competitive trades), a Google Business Profile that is verified and complete, and at least some website content that addresses the specific queries — a service page for each major service type, with the city named explicitly. Contractors with all three appear regularly. Those with only one or two appear inconsistently or not at all.
