NAP Consistency for Local Businesses and AEO

NAP stands for name, address, and phone number — the three data points that identify your business across every platform where it appears. When these three pieces of information are inconsistent across your website, Google Business Profile, and directories, AI systems have conflicting data about your business and reduce their confidence in recommending it. NAP consistency is one of the cheapest and highest-ROI fixes in local AEO.

AI systems and search engines validate a business's existence and credibility by cross-referencing its data across multiple sources. When the same business appears as 'ABC Plumbing' on Google, 'A.B.C. Plumbing Ltd.' on Yelp, and 'ABC Plumbing Services' on HomeStars, the signals don't consolidate cleanly. The AI system can't be certain these are the same business, which reduces citation confidence.

The most common NAP inconsistencies and their causes:

Business name variations: legal name vs. operating name vs. shortened name vs. name with or without 'Ltd.' or 'Inc.'. Pick one exact format and use it everywhere.

Address variations: 'Suite 200' vs '#200' vs 'Ste. 200', 'Avenue' vs 'Ave', 'Street' vs 'St'. The formatting should be identical across every directory.

Phone number format: (780) 555-1234 vs 780-555-1234 vs 7805551234. Pick one format and use it consistently.

Old addresses and phone numbers: businesses that have moved or changed their phone number often have dozens of directory listings still showing the old information. These old listings actively harm AI visibility by introducing conflicting data.

NAP consistency audit process:

1. Define your canonical NAP: the exact business name, address format, and phone number that you will use on every platform going forward.

2. Search for your business on major directories: Google, Yelp, HomeStars, Houzz, BBB, Yellow Pages, Foursquare, Bing Places, Apple Maps.

3. Correct every inconsistency: update listings that differ from your canonical NAP. For listings you don't control directly, use the claim/correct process on each platform.

4. Update your website: ensure your website footer, contact page, and any embedded maps use the canonical NAP format exactly.
