Local Link Building for Contractors
Local backlinks — links from other Alberta websites pointing to your contractor website — are a Google ranking signal that also contributes to AI visibility. Not all links are equal: a link from the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, a construction industry association, or a local newspaper is worth significantly more than links from generic directories or purchased link farms.
For contractors, the most valuable local link sources are:
1. Industry associations APEGA (for engineers), AACA (Alberta Association of Architects), CAHPI (Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors), the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association, HRAI (Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute) — most industry associations have member directories that include links to member websites. These are high-authority links because the domains are trusted industry sources.
2. Chambers of commerce and business associations Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, Calgary Chamber of Commerce, and local business improvement area associations typically list member businesses with website links. These links carry moderate authority and are easy to obtain through membership.
3. Local news mentions Local press coverage — a community newspaper covering a notable project, a business journal profiling a growing firm, a radio station's website mentioning a local business — generates links from news domains, which carry significant authority. The path to news coverage is often a press release about a notable project, a community involvement story, or an expert comment on an industry topic.
4. Supplier and manufacturer partner pages Roofing material manufacturers, HVAC equipment brands, and building product suppliers often list 'certified installers' or 'authorised dealers' on their websites. If you're certified to install or sell a specific product line, ask to be added to their contractor locator or dealer directory.
5. Project-related mentions Major commercial or institutional projects often generate press coverage that mentions the contractor team. If you completed notable work on a school, hospital, or commercial building, the coverage of that project may generate organic links if the publication names the contractors involved.
What not to do: paid link schemes, generic directory submissions to low-quality directory sites, and link exchange arrangements produce links that provide little value and create risk if they violate Google's guidelines.
