How to Optimise for Local AI Queries
In priority order: complete and accurate Google Business Profile (category, services, service area, hours), 40+ reviews above 4.3 stars, LocalBusiness schema on your website with service area markup, and service pages that directly answer the questions customers ask before hiring. These four produce the majority of local AI visibility improvement.
The sequence matters because the signals build on each other. A website with excellent structured data but no reviews doesn't get recommended — AI systems need social proof before making a recommendation. Reviews without a complete GBP leave AI systems with incomplete business information. Schema without the underlying review and GBP signals doesn't close the loop.
After the foundation: service-area-specific content creates geographic explicitness. A service page that mentions Edmonton ten times with location-specific details (local permit requirements, common local issues, specific neighborhoods served) is more likely to be cited for Edmonton queries than a generic service page. This matters because AI systems retrieve content that includes query-relevant terms — and for local queries, city name is a primary relevance signal. Build the foundation first, then layer geographic content specificity over it.
