ChatGPT SEO: the signals that actually move the needle
ChatGPT doesn't rank pages. It generates recommendations based on how well AI systems understand your business. That means the signals that work in Google SEO are largely the wrong signals here. This page explains what ChatGPT responds to and how to build it.
ChatGPT doesn't have a ranking algorithm. It has training data.
Traditional SEO works because Google's algorithm is consistent and partially documented. You can study what it weights, build to those signals, and measure rank changes. ChatGPT operates differently: it generates responses from patterns in its training data, which includes review platforms, business directories, structured web content, and published articles.
This means the signals that move AI recommendations are not the same as the ones that move Google rankings. A business with 200 backlinks but 8 Google reviews and thin service page content will rank well in Google and be invisible in ChatGPT. A business with 60 detailed Google reviews, clear schema markup, and well-structured FAQ pages may barely appear in Google searches but get cited consistently in AI answers.
The practice of building signals that move AI recommendations is called Answer Engine Optimization. It is not a rebrand of SEO. The overlap is real but the difference in signal priority is significant enough that a separate discipline is warranted.

SEO signals vs AEO signals
✦ Methodology
How to build ChatGPT citation authority
In order of impact, starting from the signal that moves results fastest.
Review foundation
Get to 20+ Google reviews averaging above 4.2. This is the highest-priority step. No other AEO investment overcomes a thin review base. Implement a systematic review request process first.
Structured content
Rewrite service pages and your About page so AI systems can extract clear, specific answers. Use question-format headings followed by direct answers. Remove corporate vagueness — state exactly what you do, where, and for whom.
Schema markup
Add LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, and Organization schema. This gives AI systems machine-readable facts about your business that they can use with high confidence. Without schema, AI platforms infer — and inference is less reliable.
Entity consistency
Ensure your name, address, phone, and category are identical across Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Yelp, Bing Places, and relevant industry directories. Inconsistency signals uncertainty to AI systems.
LLM instruction files
Create a llms.txt file and related structured documents that tell AI crawlers exactly how to represent your business. This is a direct channel to AI systems that most businesses have not yet implemented.
Track and refine
Run consistent queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude monthly. Record which businesses appear and how accurately your business is described. Adjust strategy based on what the platforms are citing.
